OpenAI has introduced a new system for integrating third-party tools into ChatGPT and Codex, allowing developers to embed applications directly within the interface. The update enables plugins to appear in the sidebar, interactive panels alongside conversations, or custom file viewers for supported formats. This approach creates a more seamless experience for users interacting with external tools.
The framework relies on OpenAI MCP Extensions, which connect plugins to specific interface components, including the sidebar, message composer, and file handling tools. Developers can register support for multiple extension types, such as sidebar apps, conversation panels, or file editors, using minimal SDK code. The protocol also supports deep links, bidirectional context sharing between ChatGPT and external applications, and structured forms for user input. These features enhance functionality while maintaining a clean integration process.
Extensions will become available to ChatGPT Free and Go users on the web platform, though some advanced features, like composer mentions, will initially remain exclusive to the desktop application. Existing plugin functionality continues to operate without disruption. OpenAI has provided developer tools in TypeScript and Python, along with a language-agnostic API specification to simplify the integration process.

A key innovation allows developers to add persistent sidebar entries, enabling users to launch applications in full-screen mode directly within ChatGPT. Another feature lets plugins appear as side panels during conversations, keeping the tool visible without interrupting the chat flow. File handling has also been enhanced: plugins can now open when users select supported file types, with live updates and saving managed within the same interface.
Early adopters include Canva, Figma, and Adobe. Canva utilizes sidebar tabs for design previews, while Figma integrates file searches through composer mentions in the desktop app. Adobe enables direct editing of files via Acrobat and Photoshop within ChatGPT. A demonstration plugin, Bits & Bolts, serves as a testing platform for new extension capabilities.
The update reflects OpenAI’s broader strategy to transform ChatGPT from a standalone chatbot into a versatile platform where third-party tools operate smoothly alongside conversations. By establishing clear integration points, the company reduces obstacles for developers building services that align naturally with user workflows.
