Instacart and Shipt have launched artificial intelligence-powered shopping assistants, aiming to make online grocery shopping easier for people. The companies’ new marketplace tools, Clementine and Ask Shipt, can build grocery carts based on a conversation with a customer or an uploaded photo.
Clementine, Instacart’s new tool, learns from users’ preferences and what they’ve already shopped for on the company’s platform. It also bases its product selections on inventory levels at the customer’s chosen store. Along with filling an online grocery cart, Clementine can generate recipes, pull already published recipes, suggest savings opportunities, and automatically reorder items.
Instacart CEO Chris Rogers said that Clementine aims to ease the mental burden of grocery shopping while factoring in a customer’s budget. “Every night, millions of families ask the same question: ‘What’s for dinner?’ Not knowing the answer, let alone what to shop for, is one of the most universal human experiences, and a problem Instacart is built to solve,” Rogers said.
Clementine comes nearly a year after Instacart’s unveiling of Cart Assistant, an AI assistant for retailers’ websites that uses the same technology behind Clementine. Instacart also announced that more retailer partners, including Food Bazaar, Heritage Grocers Group, and Woodman’s Markets, have started offering the Cart Assistant.
Meanwhile, Ask Shipt can identify ingredients based on a photo of a dish, plan a meal for a party, follow prompts about staying under a certain budget, and surface promotions. Shipt said that customers can review and edit the AI assistant-built cart before checking out. The company will soon launch a feature called Shared Lists, which will let multiple people contribute to a shopping list that can be turned into a cart.
Shipt’s chief technology and product officer, Smrutha Ipparthi, said that the company is building practical innovations that fit naturally into everyday life. “From AI-powered shopping experiences to new collaborative tools like Shared Lists, we’re building practical innovations that fit naturally into everyday life,” Ipparthi said.
The launches of these AI-powered shopping assistants are the latest efforts by third-party technology providers to help make online grocery shopping easier for people. By providing personalized shopping experiences and streamlining the grocery shopping process, Instacart and Shipt aim to make a significant impact on the way people shop for groceries online.
As the use of AI in grocery shopping continues to grow, it is likely that there will be more innovations in this space. Instacart and Shipt are leading the charge with their AI-powered shopping assistants, making it easier for people to plan and shop for meals online.
They are making online grocery shopping more convenient. Additionally, with features like Clementine’s ability to follow a household’s typical food choices and accommodate preferences such as gluten-free or organic, users can expect a more tailored experience that meets their specific needs and dietary requirements.
