Stop & Shop has reopened its newly remodeled store at 713 E. Broadway in South Boston, marking the occasion with a weekend of festivities that began Aug. 28. The Quincy, Massachusetts-based grocer offered giveaways including free mini tote bags customized with Boston and Southie-themed patches. California Launches New ‘Made In California’ Label
The renovation brings more fresh produce to the Southie location, including organic potatoes, onions and cabbage. The store now stocks a broader selection of Badia seasonings and has expanded its grab-and-go cases for deli favorites. New plant-based and gluten-free sections round out the offerings.
Shoppers will notice upgraded refrigerated display cases and bright new lighting throughout the store. A community mural in the produce department features a special nod to the neighborhood, representing the city of Boston with Southie imagery.
Weather and Practical Improvements
The remodel addressed practical concerns specific to the neighborhood. More storefront windows were installed at the entrance and exit to reduce wind and cold air from entering during Boston winters. New dual-use registers arriving this fall will allow the store to convert more lanes to self-scan as needed. A soup bar is also planned for this fall.
“This remodel is about more than updating a store,” said Store Manager Munish Kumar. “It’s about showing our Southie neighbors that we’ve listened. Our neighbors’ feedback helped shape improvements throughout the store, creating a more enjoyable and convenient shopping experience. We’re proud to be part of this community and excited to welcome customers into a refreshed space that feels inviting, reflects the character of the neighborhood and is something they can take pride in.”
The store operates Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Online pickup is available.
Community Investment
To celebrate the reopening, Stop & Shop donated $2,000 to the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council, which supports the community through efforts including production of the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
The South Boston remodel is part of a multi-year transformation strategy the company announced in May 2024. That plan pairs store renovations with lower everyday prices, now implemented across its more than 350 stores, and a renewed focus on the in-store experience. The approach reflects a broader industry shift toward making physical retail locations more competitive with online alternatives, particularly in urban markets where space constraints and customer expectations have pushed grocers to rethink their layouts and product mix.
