Brennan Joins Sofa Club as New Member

Paul Brennan, who has moved from senior roles at luxury fashion houses to the managing director seat at Sofa Club, says his career has been guided by a mix of curiosity and people‑focused leadership.

From retail floor to fashion executive

Brennan began his retail journey as a trolley boy at a Marks & Spencer store in Merry Hill. He recalls an HR manager telling him, “This could be a career, not just a Saturday job,” a comment that stuck with him as he pursued a degree in Retail Management.

After a sandwich‑year stint on the shop floor, he shifted toward head‑office functions, drawn to the strategic side of buying decisions.

His first post‑graduation role was a trainee assistant manager position at Debenhams, where he honed a hands‑on approach to learning new responsibilities. Over the following years, he climbed the ladder, eventually taking on senior leadership positions at Marc Jacobs and Browns. In each role, he emphasized teamwork and the importance of believing in the brand’s mission.

Why a furniture brand appealed

When the opportunity at Sofa Club arose, Brennan says the people and the energy of the team were decisive factors. “When I met Tom and the team, there was a real energy there, especially Tom’s passion for building something special,” he told the outlet.

The prospect of blending a fashion‑led mindset with home furnishings also intrigued him, offering a fresh challenge compared with traditional furniture retail.

He notes that while terminology and logistics differ, the core objective remains the same: creating products that customers love and presenting them in a compelling way. The transition has felt “quite natural,” despite the need to adapt to new supply‑chain nuances.

Brennan’s experience spans both chief operating officer and managing director responsibilities. The dual perspective gives him a “more rounded view,” allowing him to see how decisions in merchandising affect logistics, marketing, and finance. “You can’t just think about where you want to go, you also have to think about how you actually get there and make it work commercially,” he explained.

His leadership style has become calmer with time. Early in his career, he reacted quickly to challenges, but experience taught him that not every issue requires an immediate response.

He now prioritizes learning—through reading and observing how others operate—and strives to be more measured in allocating his time and energy.

Looking ahead, Brennan highlights the recent opening of a new concept store at the Metrocentre in Newcastle. The venue features a distinct aesthetic while retaining the relaxed Sofa Club atmosphere.

Plans are underway for additional locations in Cardiff, Edinburgh, and another site later this year.

While the shift from high‑end fashion to furniture may appear unconventional, it mirrors a broader trend where retailers seek to blur category lines.

Companies like West Elm have similarly infused design sensibilities into home goods, suggesting that cross‑industry talent can be a strategic asset. Brennan’s move illustrates how expertise in brand storytelling and customer experience can translate across product categories, potentially giving Sofa Club an edge in a competitive market.
